Some of the most beautiful moments of our nomadic life happen when we’re not doing anything particularly extraordinary.
There’s no spectacular hike planned, no new destination to explore, and no exciting adventure waiting around the corner.
Just another ordinary day on the road.
And yet, somehow, these are often the days that fill me with the greatest sense of wonder.

When the Extraordinary Becomes Everyday Life
Living a nomadic lifestyle has given Eben and me the opportunity to experience some of America’s most breathtaking landscapes. From towering mountains and peaceful forests to vast deserts and beautiful coastlines, our ever-changing surroundings continue to amaze me.
But after years of traveling, I’ve come to appreciate something beyond the excitement of discovering new places.
It’s the quiet beauty of simply being where we are.
Our mornings might begin with a cup of coffee, a walk with Bodie, and watching the world awaken outside our travel trailer.

There are dishes to wash, groceries to buy, laundry to tackle, and the never-ending responsibilities that come with maintaining our little home on wheels.
Life on the road isn’t one continuous vacation!
Some days are filled with activity. Others unfold slowly, without much of a plan.
And I’m discovering just how much beauty can be found in both.
What once might have seemed like an uneventful day has become something I genuinely look forward to. No itinerary, no expectations, and nowhere else we need to be.
There’s a certain freedom in that simplicity.
The Magic of Light
After years of traveling, I still find myself captivated by the way light transforms a landscape. It doesn’t matter whether we’re standing at a famous national park overlook or beside a quiet, unfamiliar stretch of shoreline. Sometimes, all it takes is a little golden sunlight to make an ordinary place feel extraordinary.
One evening, while camping in a remote corner of northwestern Montana, Eben and I decided to take a drive. Along the way, we noticed a gathering of people near a lake and, curious about what was happening, decided to stop.
To our delight, an outdoor band was playing, people were dancing, and everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time. It reminded us of the carefree afternoons we’d enjoyed listening to live music along Florida’s coast.
Later, we wandered down toward the water, where the evening sunlight was casting a beautiful golden glow across the rocky shoreline. The contrast between the golden cliffs, deep blue water, and distant mountains was simply stunning.

We hadn’t planned any of it. We’d simply followed our curiosity and happened upon a beautiful moment.
That’s one of the things I love most about our nomadic lifestyle. We never quite know what awaits us around the next bend. And sometimes, the most beautiful moments happen when we least expect them.
Finding Joy in the In-Between
When people imagine a life of full-time travel, they often picture the highlights. The magnificent national parks, incredible hiking trails, scenic drives, and unforgettable destinations.
And yes, those experiences are a wonderful part of our journey!
But there’s another side to nomadic living that doesn’t always make it into the photographs.
It’s the everyday moments between adventures.
The afternoons spent relaxing at camp. The pleasure of discovering a charming little town. The simple joy of spending time outdoors with Bodie.
There’s something wonderful about these simple pleasures. They might not seem particularly exciting, but they often become some of my favorite memories.
Even our everyday walks with Bodie can bring delightful surprises, like these cheerful yellow wildflowers scattered across the meadows of Crested Butte, Colorado.

Of course, not every day on the road is picture-perfect. There are travel frustrations, unexpected challenges, and the occasional day when things simply don’t go as planned.
But even then, there’s usually something to smile about.
When Life Slows Down
One of the things I appreciate most about nomadic life is living at a pace connected to nature. While much of our time is spent exploring, traveling, or preparing for the next adventure, there are days when Mother Nature makes our plans for us.
Over the past four months, we’ve had to stay flexible—fleeing wildfires in Colorado and navigating extreme heat and storms in Utah. And although those long, multi-day rainstorms, like the ones we experienced in Capitol Reef, can certainly test our patience, Eben and I have learned to embrace the unexpected downtime.
When the weather keeps us inside the trailer, we catch up on reading, dive into creative projects, and enjoy a little extra time to relax. (And Bodie never complains about the extra snuggles!)
Best of all, there’s often a beautiful reward when the storm finally breaks. Nature has a wonderful way of surprising us with dramatic skies, golden light, and breathtaking cloud formations.

Sometimes I think back to the early days of our travels, when nearly everything felt new and unfamiliar.
A Little More Wonder
I was eager to explore, discover, and experience as much as possible.
That excitement hasn’t disappeared. I still love the anticipation of traveling somewhere new, hiking an unfamiliar trail, or witnessing a landscape for the very first time.
But these days, I find myself equally content with the moments in between.
A quiet morning.
A beautiful reflection.
A passing cloud.
The warmth of the sun on my face.
Little things that might easily go unnoticed in the busyness of everyday life.
A Moment I Almost Missed
One recent morning, I experienced one of those moments that reminded me how extraordinary the simplest things can be.
It was early, and I was sitting on a beautiful coral-pink sand dune with Bodie by my side. I dug my bare feet and hands into the cool sand, feeling the warmth of the morning sun against my skin.
I took several deep breaths and simply listened.
There was nowhere I needed to be, nothing I needed to accomplish. Just the peacefulness of the morning, the sand beneath me, and the quiet companionship of my sweet dog.
And something struck me.
Here I was, doing absolutely nothing remarkable, yet experiencing one of the most peaceful and enjoyable moments of my life.
Just sitting in the sand with Bodie.
And here’s something that made the morning even more memorable. I had forgotten my phone.
For someone who loves photography as much as I do, that’s a rare occurrence! I’m almost always looking for beautiful moments to capture along our travels.
But this morning, there was no camera, no photographs, and no thought of preserving the moment for later.
And perhaps that’s what made it so special. For once, I didn’t capture the beauty around me in a photograph. I carried it away as a memory.
Living close to nature has given me countless opportunities to experience moments like these. But I’ve come to realize that we don’t need to travel to extraordinary places or seek out grand adventures to find wonder.
It’s available to all of us, wherever we happen to be.
Sometimes, we simply need to look around.

Maybe the extraordinary life isn’t the one filled with extraordinary experiences. Maybe it’s the one in which we never lose our capacity for wonder.
