My Experience
Wonderful location if you want to visit family in The Villages and Wildwood.
I booked the Equestrian Campsite which is a large open field with several non-potable water spigots, fire rings, and picnic tables. The sites are not numbered so the idea is to park near a fire ring if you can, otherwise, just pick a spot. Try and leave some room between you and the closest neighbor.
On weekends the Equestrian Campsite is popular with horses so be prepared for droppings or book the Primitive Campsite instead.
The Primitive Campsite is mostly under very large trees (with some sun) but still with plenty of room to spread out even for very large trailers. There are non-potable water spigots, fire rings, and picnic tables at several locations. If you depend heavily on solar, then the Equestrian Campsite is a better option.
A very visible camp host was present during all my previous visits and this adds a sense of safety and loud noise management. I’ve never had a bad experience with other campers at this location. I trust you will experience the same!
There are several lightly used hiking/biking trails at the campground (see trail map in the photos below).
TIP – The campground is known for many closures during hunting seasons and other events. Pick your booking windows carefully and plan ahead. Closure dates are posted on the website.
There is some highway noise at times but nothing to worry about. Mosquitoes were manageable during all my stays. Fire ants are present in the grass. Verizon is good!
Lake Panasoffkee is definitely a favorite free camping area of many experienced nomads!
